Week 8 Announcement

Announcement:
Unfortunately, there won't be a Start, Bench, and Sleeper article this week, due to personal reasons (I've had no time, having just finished an 8 hour test). I'll make up for it next week with some good stuff, so be on the look out.

Q: Trade Question
Kevin Jones and LJ Smith for Dunn and Crumpler.
we start 1 QB 2 RB 2 WR 1TE 1K 5 IDP

A: Jones will net you about the same, if not more, FF points than Dunn because of the amount of balls he catches. Does your league allow points for pass catching backs? That is the key to winning most leagues - get the backs who see a lot of action. I know in the yahoo league I'm in, Jones tears it up every week, because he is averaging like 50 receiving yards every week. Hell, even this past week he got like 25 points and he didn't tear it up on the ground. Dunn is a good runner, but it's easy to shut down their run game and force them to pass.

LJ Smith is a stud. He's a top TE this year and sees a lot of action. He's got more receptions this year (though Crump's 3 TD game was a fluke that won't happen again this season) and he's got a much more reliable QB.

Personally, I would take the trade.

Q: Amani Toomer or Braylon Edwards?
A: Toomer stinks. The Giants are passing quite a bit (controlling the clock more than anything) but Toomer isn't getting more than 4 looks a game, tops. His 2 TD 100+ yard game was a fluke. Sharing with Plax, Shockey, and Barber doesn't help.

Edwards all the way. He's the best WR in the Browns offense, gets ~10 looks a game...even though Frye is on his back faster than he can throw the ball.
As far as Edwards is concerned...you can't blame him. He was matching up on Champ Bailey and the rest of his offense was getting owned by one of the top defenses in the league. This week he should do MUCH better against the Jets.

Q:
Do you think Chris Henry will actually play this week?
A:
I imagine Henry will be in the mix, but not a whole lot. TJ is starting to get more and more catches, though. Henry has, historically, been a big part of the Cinci offense and puts up numbers comparable to TJ.

This week is entirely up to Marv and co...considering Perry is back from his injury and is seeing some catches out of the backfield.

By the way, Chad Johnson already said he would shave his head if DeAngelo Hall shuts him down. Both are huge smack talkers, but I expect Johnson to tear it up this week.

Week 7 Questions

Q: With Larry Fitzgerald out, I'm starting 2nd or 3rd string fantasy receivers. This week it's Braylon Edwards, Terry Glenn, and Lee Evans. Which WRs have good matchups?
A: The word on Fitz is that he'll sit out this week AND next and then he has a bye. He'll come back week 10 for sure.

Edwards has a tough matchup, but should get 10-12 looks against a great Denver defense. Denver is stopping teams on the ground and Frye will have few options (Denver has done very well against TEs), meaning Edwards should see a lot of passes...but can he beat Champ Bailey? We'll see.

Glenn has a pretty good matchup at NYG. I like Glenn a lot here. All depends on how Dallas' OL holds up in pass protection, meaning it’s up to how quick Bledsoe can get the ball off. I fully expect Julius Jones to get 20+ carries and 100+ yards in this game.

Lee Evans is a must start because of how often Losman targets him. Buffalo is facing a tough NE team, but the weakness is their secondary. I expect Losman to have a rough day, but when Buffalo goes to their hurry up, short pass game, Evans gets a ton of catches. Evans should catch 8-10 balls in this game for 85+ yards. McGahee is definately riding the pine this week on FF roster. He won't break 70 yards on the ground.

Q: Any WR sleepers this week?
A: Most of the good sleepers are already on a roster someplace. But here’s some guys who may be on the waiver/FA that will do pretty well this week.

Bryant Johnson (Cards) vs Oak. Leinart is making things happen and with Edge averaging garbage numbers on the ground, most of Arizona's yardage will come through the air. Johnson is sure to see about 6 catches.

Eric Parker (SD) vs KC. I think Parker has a solid week this week against KC. I think SD will put up ~30 points and Rivers should have 2 TDs through the air. Parker's getting more looks every week.

Deion Branch (Seattle) vs Min. I said he'd have a big week last week and he came through. I love his talent and he's a big play guy.

Javon Walker (Denver) vs CLE. Walker's going to have a big day. He's getting more and more involved in the offense, who is struggling through the air. I think we'll see Cutler sooner than later.

Joe Jurevicius (Cleveland) vs Denver. Joe Jurevicius is starting now that Dennis Northcutt is out. I thought Joe would help Cleveland quite a bit and they would have a very competitive pass offense this season. Edwards and Winslow have done their part, so we’ll see on Joe.

Q: I have an Offensive flex position in which I can put in any offensive player. My question is should I start Laurence Maroney at Buffalo, DeShaun Foster at Cinci, or Ben Roethlisberger at Atlanta?
A: I wouldn't put Ben in a flex position. Most leagues give points in a flex position based on number of catches are rushes. I’m not sure how that would work out for a QB.
Atlanta has a very good pass D. so I expect a 2 TD, 1 INT day possible for Big Ben. I wouldn’t necessarily expect a repeat performance of last week.

Foster hasn't been that good this season, but I like him simply because DeAngelo Williams is out and he's really the ONLY back worthy of a starting spot in Carolina. I think this will be a good game as Cinci starts to get back on track, so the Panthers will run the ball at least 20 times. Foster will get his touches and will find the endzone at least once.

I like Maroney at Buffalo, but I don't like the fact that he's sharing almost 50/50 with Dillon. For that reason, Foster is the better pick.

Week 7 – Start, Bench, and Waiver

Byes: Chicago, Baltimore, New Orleans, San Francisco, St. Louis, Tennessee

Start
Chad Pennington, QB, New York Jets – NYJ/Detroit is going to be one heck of an offensive shootout. I can’t imagine both teams not scoring 30 each. Pennington is near-2002 form this season. Just imagine what he’d do if the Jets actually had a run game! Detroit has allowed a league high 13 pass TDs this season; expect at least two more this week.
Matt Leinart, QB, ArizonaAfter his performance last week against the league’s #1 defense (AND without his #1 WR in Larry Fitzgerald), how can you not start him? Boldin and Johnson can still hold their own. Considering Grossman, Brees, and Bulger are all on byes, Leinart is a safe start.
Eli Manning, QB, New York Giants – Manning has 11 TDs through 5 games this season. Interesting stats: 3 of his 7 INTs came in one game against the Seahawks. Dallas is middle of the road against the pass, but Eli has 8 of this 11 TDs on the road. I like Eli as well as Plaxico Burress this week. Burress should see 80 yards and a score.
Byron Leftwich, QB, Jacksonville – Leftwich is going to have a ton of time in the pocket. He’s behind one of the league’s best offensive lines and he’s facing quite possibly the league’s worst defensive lines. The Texans pass defense is horrible.
Fred Taylor, RB,
JacksonvilleAnybody facing Houston is a must start. Houston is 29th against the run and Taylor is doing well, considering he’s splitting time with Maurice Jones-Drew.
Ronnie Brown, RB,
Miami Green Bay is middle of the road in terms of rush defense, but they’ve allowed one TD per game on the ground. With Harrington being inconsistent, I like Brown’s chances, especially considering the amount of carries he’ll get this week.
Kevin Jones, RB, Detroit – The Jets rush defense is pathetic; 12 TDs in 6 games. Jones is the perfect flex back this week as he already has set career highs for number of receptions and receiving yards in a season. Jones has 4 TDs through 6 games and should pound out another two on the ground this week.
Willie Parker, RB, Pittsburgh – Parker is a must start this week. Look at what Tiki did last week against the Falcons; 185 yards on the ground. Parker is a big play back who has a better offensive line. Parker could see 130 yards and 2 scores in this contest before Davenport starts getting the bulk of the carries.
Edgerrin James, RB, Arizona – I know, I said that it’s time to cut bait with Edge…but he’s going to have ONE 100+ yard day this season…and it’s going to come this week. Oakland has been torched for nearly 150 yards per game on the ground. Edge finally shows he was worth the money he was paid, but unfortunately for Arizona, it’ll be the only time this season he proves his worth.
Deion Branch, WR,
Seattle Deion Branch on Fred Smoot…I’m taking Branch. I think Branch will have a big day, possibly 100 yards. With Alexander out and being replaced by Maurice Morris, the Seahawks will throw 35+ times. Branch had a big week last week and I look for that trend to continue.
Lee Evans, WR, Buffalo Lee Evans is a must start because of how often Losman targets him. Buffalo is facing a tough NE team, but the weakness is their secondary. I expect Losman to have a rough day, but when Buffalo goes to their hurry up, short pass game, Evans gets a ton of catches. Evans should catch 8-10 balls in this game for 85+ yards and a score.
Greg Jennings, WR, Green BayJennings is a big play WR. I absolutely love this guy’s potential. Jennings has had two 100 yard games and scored in three of his last four games. Miami may only allow 170 passing yards per game, but they’ve given up 10 TDs in six games.
Wes Welker, WR, Miami – Chris Chambers will have a big day, but he’ll have to earn everything he gets by being matched up on Al Harris. Welker will be open quite a bit because McMichael will be a threat over the middle and Chambers will be commanding safety help on nearly every pass. I like Welker’s chances for a near 100 yard day. Green Bay is dead last in pass defense.
Randy McMichael, TE, MiamiGreen Bay hasn’t covered TEs well this season, as they have a huge matchup problem with McMichael matching up on Brady Poppinga, who has been awful in coverage. Harrington has been looking for McMichael more and more in games, especially to sustain drives toward the latter part of the game.
Josh Brown, K, Seattle – Brown has been one of the hottest kickers this season. Seattle should be settling for quite a few FGs, as Minnesota has a solid defense, especially their run defense.
Arizona, DEF – If your main defense is on a bye (Chicago or Baltimore namely), you’re probably looking for a one week replacement D. Arizona’s your pick. Do I honestly have to go through Oakland’s lack of offense right now?

Bench
JP Losman, QB, Bills –
New England’s pass defense is barely average. Sure, they’ve only allowed 4 passing TDs and they only have 12 sacks in 5 games, but they’re better than they seem. New England had a rough start last season and finished strong, just as they’re doing this year. Losman is too inconsistent to risk here.
Michael Vick, QB,
AtlantaVick isn’t a good fantasy starter, unless he’s playing the Texans; he’s just that inconsistent. If a team can control Vick, they can control the Falcon offense. The Steelers will easily do that this week.
Brett Favre, QB, Green Bay -- Favre should have a few big connections to Greg Jennings, but you better start up the INT counter, because Favre's going to throw another two this week. Against Miami, who has solid corners and linebackers, Favre is definately not the QB you want starting.
Willis McGahee, RB, BuffaloNew England is going to own Buffalo this week. McGahee has been struggling and so has Buffalo, especially after managing a whopping 17 points against a bad Detroit defense. New England is holding opponents to less than 86 rushing yards per game and less than 1 TD per game. After the way McGahee struggled against Detroit last weekend, it’s safe to keep him on the bench.
Maurice Morris, RB, Seattle –
Morris managed less than 3.0 yards per carry against a 23rd ranked St. Louis rush defense. Minnesota is allowing less than 75 yards per game and less than 1 TD per game on the ground.
Reuben Droughns, RB, Cleveland –
Droughns, when healthy, has been decent. However, the Denver defense has allowed one rushing TD over five games. Don’t bet Droughns here, or you’ll be extremely disappointed.
Tiki Barber, RB, New York Giants – Tiki’s coming off an eye-popping week against the Falcons. Don’t expect the same against Dallas, who leads the league in rush defense. Dallas has allowed four rushing TDs in five games, but they’re holding opponents to less than 2.9 yards per carry. Tiki should be happy if he breaks 100 yards. He’s still scoreless, too.
Andre Johnson, WR, Houston – Johnson on Rashean Mathis is going to be an awesome matchup. David Carr is going to be harassed all day long, which isn’t good for Johnson. Look for Samkon Gado and Wali Lundy to see most of the action and Eric Moulds will be more involved than usual.
Hines Wards, WR, Pittsburgh – Ward will turn his slow season around, but definitely not this week against DeAngelo Williams. Williams shut down Plaxico Burress last week and held a big part of the Giants’ offense to 4 catches for 44 yards.
Keyshawn Johnson, WR, Carolina – Johnson stepped up when Steve Smith was out with a hamstring injury, but since then, he’s done little. Steve Smith IS the Carolina offense. Other WRs will get more looks and have more potential.
Amani Toomer, WR, New York Giants -- Toomer has had one amazing game this season, otherwise, he's been terrible. Toomer is just waisting space on your bench and will be the luckiest WR in the NFL if he ever sees 137 yards or two TDs against this season. With Toomer, it’s time to cut bait.
Alge Crumpler, TE, Falcons
Pittsburgh has a good defense and has done a great job at containing TEs this season (see week 6 when Tony Gonzalez was limited to 3 catches for 15 yards). With Vick being inconsistent and Pittsburgh having a very good defense, Crumpler should be on the bench this week.
Kellen Winslow, TE, Cleveland – Don’t bet against the Broncos defense. Charlie Frye will be lucky to get the ball off this week and will probably spend more time on the ground than under center. This is a bad, bad matchup.
Neil Rackers, K, Cardinals
– Neil has blown two games this season for the Cards; a last second FG to send the Cards into OT against the Cheifs and a game winning FG against the 6-0 Bears for he biggest upset of the season.
Cincinnati, DEF – The Panthers offense is explosive with Steve Smith. The Panthers scored 23 on Baltimore. Cincinnati has been struggling, losing to the Bucs last week. Cincinnati should give up good field position to Carolina, who will be eager to take advantage.

Waiver
Joey Harrington, QB,
Miami – If there’s one thing I know about Harrington, from being a die-hard Lions fan, is that he will have an amazing week surrounded by 4 horrid weeks. This could be the week as he faces a league worst Green Bay pass defense.
Maurice Morris, RB, Seahawks – Seattle will run the ball against the Bears. Seattle has a plethora of good WRs, but their OL has to fend off the best front 7 in the league. I think Holmgren will be running the ball and Morris will get good numbers for a backup.
Deion Branch, WR, Seahawks – It’s possible he’s lingering around the waiver someplace. Branch is starting now and is sure to put up decent numbers.
Bryant Johnson, WR, Cardinals – With Fitzgerald out, Johnson has a chance to step up. Leinart has shown that he looks for Johnson as much as Boldin or Fitzgerald. Johnson is currently the best waiver wire pickup, in my opinion.
Eric Parker, WR, San Deigo – Parker is getting an increased number of looks every week. I like Parker simply because he’s in a balance offense that spreads the ball around, however, LDT still gets the goal line shots.
Doug Gabriel, WR, New England – Gabriel should have a good day against a struggling Buffalo defense. New England spreads the ball around and Gabriel is a lock to have ~70 receiving yards and quite possibly a score. Nice W/R flex player.
Mercedes Lewis, TE, Jaguars – Lewis will see an increased role this week in the offense, as Matt Jones still has some lingering effects from his groin injury. Lewis was drafted to be a nice safety valve for Leftwich, like Gates is in San Deigo. Lewis should evolve into a nice waiver pickup in the next few weeks.

Time to cut bait

So we’re getting close to midseason and here’s a few players that have probably made you pretty angry thus far. Some of these players, namely Edge, Jordan, Moss, and Lewis have trade value…so don’t just cut them…TRADE them! At least try and find some takers. I’ve seen Edge being packaged in some big deals.

Jake Plummer, QB, Denver – The Broncos are winning games, but Plummer is putting up terrible stats. Ditch him while you can.

Steve McNair, QB, Baltimore – Yeah, he’s injured, what’s new? I’ve never been a McNair fan (outside of the Super Bowl year because I hated the Rams). He’s put up average numbers at best so far this season and his injury will only help Kyle Boller step in and throw for a 97.0 QB rating.

Daunte Culpepper, QB, Miami – Culpepper has been terrible without Randy Moss. Pep’s been under-utilizing a fantastic TE in Randy McMichael and seems scared of the endzone. Even given the fact that he’ll most likely start when he’s healthy, better backups can be had via free agency or the waiver wire.

Lamont Jordan, RB, Oakland Jordan has had one good game this season and the only reason that game was considered good was because he broke a long run. Other than that, he’s stunk.

Edgerrin James, RB, Arizona – I called James a fantasy bust this season and he has proven me right week in and week out. For those that drafted James in the first round, ouch. I hate to say it, but it may be time to deal him for the little he’s worth. Yeah, Arizona’s played some solid run defenses, but he couldn’t break 100 yards against the 49ers, who have given up 9 TDs on the ground in 6 games. James only has a few matchups left this season that I would consider good: Oakland, Green Bay, St. Louis, and San Francisco. Six of his next 10 games come against teams who are at least ranked higher than 13th in rush defense.

Jamal Lewis, RB, Baltimore – I obviously have my doubts as to whether Lewis will become the back he was two years ago. He says he needs 20+ touches a game to be solid. Najeh Davenport only needed 12 touches to gain 78 yards and a TD against a solid KC run defense. Sounds like excuses Jamal, now shut up and run the ball.

Randy Moss, WR, Oakland – Try to get rid of him. You’ve probably been trying, but it’ll be a shocker if he puts up over 100 yards this season with the way Oakland’s playing. Up next: Cards, Steelers, Seahawks, Broncos, Chiefs, Chargers…

Bobby Engram & Nate Burleson, WRs, Seattle – I don’t care what Holmgren says about 4 WR sets, Branch is the #2 in Seattle right now and he’s more talented than Burleson and Engram combined. I called Branch to have a big week and he did. Jackson and Branch are much better at getting open and will get much more looks than a #3 or 4 WR who sees minimal playing time. Jeremey Stevens is due back soon as well.

Mushin Muhammad, WR, Chicago – Moose was a good receiver…three years ago. Berrian has established himself as a true #2 WR and Des Clark emerged as the pass catching TE everyone wanted. Moose is a good, physical, possession WR, but he won’t do much in terms of production. Plus, Mark Bradley is coming back, meaning more 3 WR sets.

Ashlie Lelie, WR, Atlanta – Lelie is one WR I thought would benefit given a scenery change. However, he’s only caught 8 passes for 150 yards (0 TDs) this season. Sure, he’s only started 2 out of 5 games, but remember who’s throwing the ball. Vick is quite possibly the most inconsistent QB in the NFL. Try to trade him for a pass catching back to someone who is either an Atlanta faithful or is more optimistic than myself.

Amani Toomer, WR, New York Giants -- Toomer has had one amazing game this season, otherwise, he's been terrible. Toomer is just waisting space on your bench and will be the luckiest WR in the NFL if he ever sees 137 yards or two TDs against this season.

Neil Rackers, K, Arizona – I was one of the unfortunate FF players who thought Rackers production would carry over from last season; he sure showed me. He’s blown the Cards chances at two big wins (Kansas City and Chicago). He’ll be lucky if he still has a job soon.

Philadelphia – 27 points allowed on 372 yards of offense, 2 INTs

Surprises
Kyle Boller, QB, Baltimore
– 17/31 226 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT (I knew McNair would get hurt at some point this season and the team would fall on Boller’s shoulders. Who knew he’d play like this?)
Mark Clayton, WR, Baltimore – 5 catches 101 yards, 2 TDs (he sure got lucky on that TD that bounced out of Derrick Mason’s hands!)
Matt Leinart, QB, Arizona – 24/42 232 yards, 2 TDs, (Okay, so we knew Leinart was for real, but against the Bears? He looked great until the 4th quarter when Arizona’s offensive line started resembling swiss cheese)
Ben Roethlisberger, QB, Pittsburgh – 16/19 238 yards 2 TDs (I didn’t think Roethlisberger would have this good of a game against one of the league’s top pass defenses. He made KC’s pass defense look awful)
Najeh Davenport, RB, Pittsburgh – 12 rushes 78 yards, 1 TD

Week 6 – Start, Bench, Waiver

Start
JP Losman, QB, Bills –
If you’ve been watching any Lions games over the season, you’d know that Losman, though the model of inconsistency, is a must start this week. QBs have been able to torch the Lions pass defense for over 265 yards per game. Detroit’s allowed more passing TDs than any team in the league (11).
Drew Bledsoe, QB, Cowboys –
Bledsoe has had a few rough weeks, but this week, against the worst pass defense in the league (Houston – 295 yards per game and 8 total TDs), expect big things from a reeling Bledsoe. Those “Romo” chants have to be quieted, right?
Rex Grossman, QB, Bears –
Arizona has a solid defense, but Chicago has a better offensive line that won’t allow many sacks, if any at all. Grossman will have longer to throw the ball, he’ll commit less mistakes, and he’ll connect with Bernard Berrian on a few long bombs. 230 yards and 2 TDs.
Jake Plummer, QB, Broncos –
Jake has an ideal match up this week against Oakland. Oakland is allowing 144 yards per game through the air, good for second in the league, but they’ve give up 8 TDs. Plummer should only throw for around 185 yards, but he should get 2 TDs.
Tatum Bell, RB, Broncos
Oakland has given up over 150 yards per game and Tatum Bell is sitting at 5.0 yard per carry. That alone doesn’t look good for Oakland. Bell doesn’t have TD on the season, but as big play back, I am sure he’ll find the end zone this week.
Julius Jones, RB, Cowboys
– Jones has been hot lately, averaging 105 yard per game over the last three games. The Texans have been torched this season for 140 yard per game and 5 TDs over 4 games, giving up 4.7 yards per carry. Jones goes for 120 yards and 1 TD. Barber scores the other rushing TD.
Ronnie Brown, RB, Dolphins –
Ronnie Brown is getting more touches, but needs around 22-25 to be effective. He hasn’t seen anywhere close to those numbers so far this season. I think against a Jets run defense that has given up 11 TDs on the season and an average of 148 yards per game, Brown will break loose for his first huge day of the season.
Warrick Dunn, RB, Falcons
– I don’t like the Giants chances here. Despite the fact that the Giants are giving up only 86 yards per game on the ground and 3 TDs in 4 games, I think Dunn has a big week and scores his first TD of the season. He’s the star of the game as the Giants try too hard to contain Vick and fail.
Deion Branch, WR, Seahawks –
Holmgren announced that Branch would be starting in place of Nate Burelson this week. Branch has a ton of talent and has been used sparingly while getting the playbook down. It was just a matter of time before he got the starting nod. With Alexander out, Seattle should be throwing the ball a little more than they like, meaning Branch will getmore looks.
Lee Evans, WR, Bill
s – This is a no brainer. The Lions have been absolutely picked apart by opposing QBs this season and only have 1 INT on the season. Evans is the only solid and consistent WR in Buffalo. I expect he’ll see about 15 looks.
Reggie Brown, WR, Eagles
– With Donte Stallworth out, Brown’s looks have increased. Despite Hank Baskett and Greg Lewis making some big plays the last two weeks, it’s been Brown who’s been the key of consistency. With the way McNabb is playing, Brown is a solid start.
Bernard Berrian, WR, Bears
– Are you one of those people saying, “Man, I’m sure glad I snagged Berrian off the waiver after week 2”? Berrian is more than a big play, deep ball WR, showing last week that he can catch passes over the middle in goal line situations. Berrian is a must start every week until he falters.
Alge Crumpler, TE, Falcons
– Crumpler is the main pass catcher in Atlanta and he’s going to count for a large chunk of the pass catching offense every week. New York’s LBers (Arrington, Pierce, and Emmons) have been awful against TEs and have given up an average of 5 catches and 64 yards per game. I highly doubt their ability to cover Crumpler.
Randy McMichael, TE, Dolphins
– McMichael is a must start with Joey Harrington at QB. Harrington has loved checking down to TEs (see Marcus Pollard leading the Lions last season with 45 catches). McMichael had many more looks last week and had season highs in catches and yards.
Rian Lindell, K, Bills
– I think the Lions defense will have an extremely difficult time stopping Evans and McGahee. Against the Lions: Longwell - 8 points, Wilkins – 15 points, Rayner – 7 points, Gould – 10 points, Brown – 9. Lindell’s missed 1 kick this season out of 16.
Atlanta
Falcons, DEF – Shockey is injured and Atlanta has one of the league’s top defenses (2nd in rush, 14th against the pass). Despite being 14th against the pass, Atlanta has allowed zero passing TDs this season and only one on the ground. Atlanta is a nice play against the streaky Giants.

Bench
Jake Delhomme, QB, Panthers
– I don’t like Delhomme’s chances against Baltimore. The Ravens are coming off a tough loss to Denver and their defense will be giving it their all. Delhomme has an average week, throwing for 180 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT. Just for kicks, Baltimore has allowed 3 TDs through the air this season…with 9 INTs (tied for tops in the league).
Steve McNair, QB, Ravens – The only team I would start “Air McNair” against would be Detroit. I haven’t seen anything so far this season that makes me believe that he’ll help get the Ravens over the better teams in the league. Last week, when the Ravens played their first good pass defense of the season (Broncos), McNair was lit up.
Marc Bulger, QB, Rams – Bulger has been consistent this season, but the Seahawks are fresh off of a bye week and are hungry to win. Seattle’s pass defense has allowed 220 yards per game and 6 TDs on the season with only 4 INTs. Those are numbers to bet Bulger on, but I wouldn’t do it simply because Seattle has a fresh defense with few injuries.
Eli Manning, QB, Giants –
Atlanta has been awesome against the pass this season, allowing no TDs through the air and only an average of 200 yards per game. Given that this game is in Atlanta and Atlanta has picked off 6 passes in 4 games, Eli rides the pine this week.
Frank Gore, RB, 49ers –
The Niners play the Chargers, who have stellar this season. Last week, the Chargers defense kept Willie Parker at 57 rushing yards and controlled the clock very well. The Niners should be throwing a lot, so Gore would be a solid flex back start as he’ll likely see 6-8 catches.
Edgerrin James, RB, Cardinals – Surely we’ve learned that you bench all RBs who face Chicago! James hasn’t been doing much against week defense, so starting him against Chicago is basically cocking the shotgun and pointing it at your foot.
Jamal Lewis, RB, Ravens – So Jamal Lewis is saying he needs more touches to be effective, who didn’t see that one coming? Lewis seems like he’s been getting worse ever since his 2066 yard season. At 3.5 ypc and only 1 TD through 5 games, I wouldn’t start Lewis unless you have to. Carolina has been decent against the run.
Willie Parker, RB,
PittsburghThe way KC has been playing, I wouldn’t take the chance. KC hasn’t allowed a 100 yard rushing game yet and has given up only 2 TDs in 4 games on the ground. Start Parker if you are out of options.
Nate Burleson, WR, Seahawks – Burleson hasn’t been worth his $49 Million contract he signed. In fact, newly-acquired Deion Branch is starting in his place. Sure, with Alexander out, Seattle is more likely to run 3 WR sets (especially since Engram is questionable). However, I still don’t like his 7 catches on the season.
Plaxico Burress, WR, Giants –
The only thing I like about the Burress/Hall match up is that Plax has the size to see a fade pass in the endzone. Other than that, I don’t like the matchup at all. Hall has been one of the best shut down corners in the league and will shut down Burress’ hot streak.
Joey Galloway, WR, Buccaneers – I didn’t like him last week and he tore it up, proving me wrong with 110 yards and a TD. However, the Bengals will prove me right this week, as they’re coming off a bye and they know that Galloway is the ideal inconsistent WR in the league and he is a big play guy.
Jeremy Shockey, TE, GiantsAtlanta has been possibly the best team in the league against TEs in the past three games, limiting TEs to less than 2 catches and 15 yards per game. In addition, Shockey has a foot injury, which only further limits his effectiveness.
Neil Rackers, K, Cardinals – I was one of those who were duped into drafting Rackers. I highly doubt the Cardinals’ ability to move the ball against Chicago, but I do like their defenses’ ability to takeaway the ball from Chicago’s offense in good field position. Either way, Rackers should ride the pine.
Washington Redskins, DEFWashington getting torched by the Titans? No…but the Titans will make this game interesting. I love what Vince Young and Travis Henry bring. I don’t expect a win, but I expect the Titans to put up a nice number of points (Washington is allowing 236 passing yards per game and has allowed 9 TDs through the air).

Waiver
Maurice Morris, RB, Seahawks –
Seattle will run the ball against the Bears. Seattle has a plethora of good WRs, but their OL has to fend off the best front 7 in the league. I think Holmgren will be running the ball and Morris will get good numbers for a backup.
Maurice Jones-Drew, RB, Jaguars -- I see Jones-Drew unseating Taylor for the starting spot in Jacksonville very soon. Jones-Drew is a good RB and he could be a good #2 RB in a couple weeks.

Week 6 Questions

Q: Which defense, Carolina vs Baltimore or New York Giants vs Atlanta?
A: The Panthers should have the better week in terms of production.

Though, this is a tough call. The Panthers just lost Dan Morgan for the year, so I've got to question their run D. However, the Ravens offense hasn't been much better than average. Peppers/Ogden will be a great match up, so I have less faith in Carolina's pass rush. Their secondary is good...just their LBs are hurting big time now.

The Giants' defense finally had a game to be proud of. They have a good amount of talent, but weren't executing. The Falcons are easily contained (just have to shut down Vick) and it'll be an easy game. I think the Giants will move the ball well and keep their D rested

Q: Which two RBs: Warrick Dunn, Cadillac Williams, or Deuce McAllister?
A: Dunn and McAllister.

Dunn is a must start every week. He puts up huge numbers, but the Giants run D is pretty solid (3 TDs in 4 games, but only 85 ypg average). I'm not so sure the Giants can contain Vick, meaning Dunn has a good day.

Caddy is starting to roll, though I don't like his chances against Carolina (despite Morgan being lost for the year). Carolina’s only allowed 3 rushing TDs through five games and Cadillac’s only scored one through four games. I don’t like his chances.

McAllister is a must start, in my opinion. I thought he was a good back and would be the man before and after they drafted Bush. Deuce is still getting his goal line chances (3 TDs in 4 games) and is running at 4.8 ypc. Brees should be leery about throwing the ball against Philly and I think Deuce will do well.

Q: Which two RBs: Clinton Portis, Steven Jackson, Ronnie Brown, or Rudi Johnson?
A: Portis and Johnson (specifically, use Portis as the flex back and start Johnson and Brown).

Portis is a must start every week. He's the center piece of the Washington offense (well, the RB is...I cleaned up with Betts when Portis was hurt). He's going to get nearly 100+ yards rushing and 30+ yards receiving every week with a score.

I love Steven Jackson, but the Rams are playing a hungry Seattle team who is coming fresh off a bye. Plus, Jackson only has one rushing TD on the season and Seattle has allowed 2 over 4 games with an 80 rushing ypg average. I'd keep Jackson on the bench this week.

Ronnie Brown has a good match up this week and should have a monster week against the Jets, who are giving up nearly 150 ypg on the ground and have given up 11 TDs in 5 games. Brown should go for at least 100 yards and a score. I'm surprised Harrington didn't look for him more last week in the receiving game. However, Brown needs to start getting more carries to be more effective.

Rudi will score at least once. Tampa is giving up 160+ yards rushing per game and Johnson is averaging a TD per game. Johnson should go for somewhere around 100 yards and a score. Johnson's the safer pick over Brown, who could be a boom or bust this week.

Q: Which two WRs: Roy Williams, Chad Johnson, Jerrico Cotchery, or Javon Walker?
A: Cotchery and Johnson.

Chad Johnson is a must start, he's just too talented and can easily net 150 yards and 2 scores. With Chris Henry out, Johnson will get more looks.

Jerrico Cotchery has a good match up this week. Coles should be matched up on Will Allen and Travis Daniels is questionable with a knee injury, meaning Goodman could get the start. Cotchery has a good match up there.

Roy Williams is probable and judging from his past injuries, I don't like him this week. He could play the whole game, but he could sit out most of the game like last year with his hammy. If you don't have to start him, it's probably best not to.

Javon Walker isn't getting a whole lot of looks from Plummer and the Broncos aren't throwing the ball a whole lot.

Q: Which three WRs: Chad Johnson, Andre Johnson, Roy Williams, Plaxico Burress, or Anquan Boldin?
A: Johnson, Johnson, and Boldin

Chad Johnson is a must start, he's just too talented and can easily net 150 yards and 2 scores. With Chris Henry out, Johnson will get more looks.

Andre Johnson is a must start every week. He's putting up big numbers and catches everything thrown his way. He IS the main man in Houston and has been putting up numbers you simply can't bench.

Roy is probable and judging from his past injuries, I don't like him this week. He could play the whole game, but he could sit out most of the game like last year with his hammy. If you don't have to start him, it's probably best not to.

Plaxico Burress matching up on DeAngelo Williams will be a pretty good matchup, though Plax definately has the size advantage. I think Williams will limit his catches, but Plax should still score because of his size (~12 points and a safe pick...but I like the gutsy calls).

Boldin will be matched up on Charles Tillman. Terrible matchup for Boldin, though, he is a great WR and will make his grabs, but Leinart will have to unload the ball quickly and I don't think Boldin will open that easily. However, due to Fitzgerald being out and Bryant Johnson’s chances of getting open, Boldin is my start over Plax.

DEF

Matt Leinart, Cardinals – 22/35 253 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT.
Leinart had a solid debut as a starter and won his teammates over. He’ll be the starter for next week at the very least. Good depth.
Hank Baskett, Eagles – 3 catches 112 yards, 1 TD.
Don’t expect another repeat performance. Stallworth will be healthy soon.

Week 5 -- Start, Bench, and Waiver

Byes: Atlanta, Cincinnati, Seattle, Houston

Start
QB
Brad Johnson, Vikings
– Johnson hasn’t had a great season thus far. He’s throwing for nice yardage, but he’s failing to score through the air. Johnson is efficient, but not a world beater, but facing a Detroit secondary that has been one of the worst in the league (giving up 10 TDs and a 71% completion rating over the first four games).
Marc Bulger, Rams – Bulger had his season breakout last week, but it was against the 30th ranked pass defense in the league. However, Green Bay is giving up more yards through the air than Detroit. Bulger may get picked off once, but he’ll throw for another 3 TDs in a blowout at Lambeau.
Alex Smith, 49ers – I have a feeling that Smith is going to perform as he did the first couple weeks of the season. Charlie Frye had a pretty good week last week with 3 TD passes and Smith will be looking to rebound from an awful performance against KC. Gore and Bryant should be putting up good numbers as well. Smith is a good backup this week if your #1 QB has a tough matchup (Culpepper, Roethlisberger, Rivers, etc).
Mark Brunell, Redskins – Brunell has been hot the past two weeks and proved last week that he could handle one of the league's best defenses. The Giants pass defense is terrible, giving up an average of 280 yards and 2 TDs per game. Brunell should have another good day with Clinton Portis and Santana Moss both having huge days once again.

RB
Joseph Addai, Colts
– Joseph Addai should have a big week this week as the Colts face a Titans defense that ranks last in the league against the rush and has given up a whopping 8 TDs in four games. The Colts should run the ball as much as they did last week, meaning 16 or so touches for Addai, who should net around 90 yards and a score. Dominick Rhodes is another solid start as well.
Frank Gore, 49ers – Gore started out as one of the hottest backs, and biggest surprises, of the season, but has tailed off. Oakland’s run
defense is terrible, giving up over an average 145 yards per game this season. Gore should return to week one form and score at least once.
Ahman Green, Packers – Green is ‘the man’ at RB in Green Bay. He’s good at running the ball, catching the ball, and blocking, so he won’t lose situational playing time. St. Louis has given up an average of 120 yard per game and 5 TDs so far this season. Green should see around 30 touches this week and should go for over 100 yards rushing and 40 yards receiving.
Fred Taylor, JaguarsCleveland gave up 128 yards to LaMont Jordan last week, who was terrible through the first two games of the season. Jacksonville has a much better passing and rushing offense than Oakland, which is sure to be a good 30+ point week for the Jags offense. Despite getting shut down last week by Washington, Taylor should bounce back and score at least once this week.

WR
Terrell Owens, Cowboys
– The Eagles pass defense has given up over 240 yards per game and 5 total TDs this season. Those aren’t bad
numbers, but Drew Bledsoe has two very good receivers, an excellent TE, and a very good running back at his disposal. Bledsoe should have a 2 TD, 1 INT game, with at least one TD going to Owens, who has failed to live up to the hype this season. Keep in mind, the Eagles have given up over 100 yards to three of four #1 WRs this season.
Randy Moss, Raiders – Moss has been dormant for three weeks, but should really open some eyes this week against the 49ers. San Francisco has allowed an average of 2 TDs per game so far this season and has zero INTs. Moss should have a big day, despite double coverage.
Troy Williamson, Vikings – Williamson has a lot of speed, the Lions secondary doesn’t. The Lions have one of the worst pass defenses in the league and Williamson gets a lot of looks from Brad Johnson, but needs to shake the case of the “dropsies” he’s had. Williamson should have his first 100 yard game on the season this week against the Lions, who gave up 100 yards to both Bruce and Holt last week.
Isaac Bruce, Rams – Bruce should be matched up on Charles Woodson this week in what should prove to be an advantage for Bruce. Bruce is an excellent route runner and Bulger can place the ball very well. Combine this with the combination of Woodson showing very little speed this season and Brady Poppinga being terrible in coverage, Bruce should have a good day.

TE
Jeremy Shockey, Giants
– Shockey is a big part of the Giants offense, but hasn’t produced much this season. Last week, the Redskins gave up 7 receptions for over 90 yards to Jags TEs, so expect Shockey to do some damage as he’s had a bye week to rest and let a 1-2 record sink in.
Ben Watson, Patriots – The Dolphins haven’t been very successful at stopping TEs this season. Heath Miller had a career day and gave up a combined 94 yards and 1 TD to Bo Scaife and Ben Troupe.
Jermain Wiggins, Vikings – The Lions pass defense over the middle is absolutely terrible. Against Green Bay, Favre completed 13 passes to his backs and TEs for over 100 yards. With a lot of time, Johnson will have much more opportunities to check down to his TEs and backs who should be an integral part of the receiving offense this week.

K
Ryan Longwell, Vikings
– Longwell has been good this season and the Vikes should put up big numbers against a bad Lions defense. 12 points should be in order for Longwell at the Metrodome this week.

DEF
Saints
– The Saints defense is underrated and ate up the Falcons offense in their last home game. The Saints’ 12th man will show up for this game as they did against the Falcons and will help the Saints to shut down a Simms-less Bucs offense that has failed to produce in all forms this season.
Patriots – This is an excellent matchup for the Pats, who face a struggling Miami offense. Culpepper has been terrible, Chambers has been somewhat inconsistent, McMichael has been awful, and Brown has shown little of his rookie form. The Pats should net a season-high sack total this week against an OL that is on pace to give up more sacks than anyone.
Chiefs – The Chiefs should have a similar performance as last week when they shut out the 49ers when they face Matt Leinart and the Cardinals this week. Leinart is raw and should make a few mistakes in his starting debut.

Bench
QB

Chad Pennington, Jets – Chad started off the season great. Nobody’s doubted the guy’s talent, just his ability to stay healthy, which hasn’t been a factor…yet. The Jets face a Jacksonville defense that has given up a good chunk of yardage through the air, but have more INTs than TDs. Pennington should throw for 240 yards, 1 TD and 2 INTs this week as the Jags rebound from a 3 TD aerial attack by Brunell and the Redskins last week.
Ben Roethlisberger, Steelers – Roethlisberger has looked absolutely terrible in his two games this season, throwing for an abysmal 49% completion rating, 0 TDs, and 5 INTs. It doesn’t get better this week against a top Charger defense. San Diego has 4 INTs on the season and has only allowed 3 TDs. They have 11 sacks in three games as well.
Jake Plummer, BroncosBaltimore’s pass defense has been absolutely dominant this season, allowing only 2 TDs and snagging 8 INTs. Plummer, who’s thrown 2 TDs and 4 INTs through three games, will be lucky to throw for a score this week.
Steve McNair, Ravens – McNair has good solid this season, but he’s not netting very many fantasy points. McNair has been only average against bad defense (Tampa Bay, Tennessee, and Cleveland) and performed about the same against San Deigo. Expecting more than 1 TD and 180 yards from McNair this week is wishful thinking.

RB
Ronnie Brown, Dolphins
– Brown is a definite bench this week, facing an always improving Patriots defense. This week’s magic number is 2; the number of TDs Brown has scored through four games and the number of rushing TDs allowed by New England through four games.
Chester Taylor, Vikings – The Lions have a very good rush defense, limiting opponents to 3.0 yards per carry and only 1 TD on the season. Taylor is averaging only 3.5 yards per carry and only has 1 TD on the season, so don’t expect him to hit anywhere near the 100 yard mark.
Jamal Lewis, Ravens – Lewis has failed to hit 100 yards in four games this year and he’s only scored once. The Ravens offense isn’t producing points like most thought they would. Lewis should lay another egg this week as he faces another good rush defense this week, which has held opponents out of the endzone on the ground so far. Lewis isn’t even worth a #3 starting spot this week.
Willis McGahee, Bills – McGahee is getting nearly 25 carries per game and is near the top of the league in rushing, but he only has 1 TD through four games. Chicago’s run defense hasn’t been that great this year giving up nearly 4.0 yards per carry, but they’ve limited opponents rushing attempts by scoring early and often, forcing them to pass. McGahee should get 80 yards, but held out of the endzone.

WR
Donte Stallworth, Eagles
– Stallworth was limited last week due to a hamstring injury (1 catch for 26 yards) and will be limited this week, if he plays. Start Reggie Brown in Stallworth’s place, as he’s more than likely to be on the sidelines for a large chunk of the game.
Lee Evans, Bills – It seems like any offensive player who faces the Bears should be benched. Just keep in mind that the Bears have allowed zero passing TDs this season and Evans has scored zero as well. Evans should ride the pine this week.
Mushin Muhammad, Bears – Moose should have a decent day as a #3 WR this week. The Bears offense is clicking, but the Bills defense is actually very good. Despite giving up 5 TDs through the air in four games, the Bills have allowed less than 200 passing yards per game and have a solid pass rush. Grossman makes mistakes when under pressure, which should have Lovie Smith calling much more on Thomas Jones this week.
Joey Galloway, Buccaneers – Galloway is as inconsistent as you can get in a WR. Check this out: Week 1 – 0 catches, Week 2 – 9 catches for 161 yards, Week 3 – 1 catch for 8 yards. Whether Chris Simms will be playing this week or not, Galloway should ride the pine.

TE
Randy McMichael, Dolphins
– McMichael should ride the bench until he starts producing. I have my doubts that Culpepper will be the QB to turn that around, but either way, McMichael is a poor start, especially against a defense like New England.
Todd Heap, Ravens – Steve McNair has been looking for Todd Heap quite a bit, especially in goal line situations. Heap has 3 TDs through 4 games, but the Broncos defense has given up only 1 TD through three games. Denver has done especially well with TEs (see Tony Gonzalez’ 2 catch, 8 yard performance).

K
Rian Lindell, Bills
– The Bears should keep the Bills struggling offense to their side of the field, leaving very few opportunities for Lindell. It’s a losing battle to bet on opponents scoring points at Soldier Field.

DEF
Giants
-- The Giants defense was great last season, which makes it that much more difficult to understand why they’re so terrible this season. They’ve given up an average of nearly 37 points per game. They’ve allowed 8 TDs through the air this season but have done a solid job against the run. Definitely bench them as they face a potent Redskin offense.
Vikings – The Lions offense has been very good the past couple games, despite facing average defenses. They’re potent both through the air and on the ground. Minnesota’s defense has been good all around, but they’re forcing few turnovers and the Lions could put up at least 3
TDs.

Waiver
Damon Huard, QB, Chiefs
– Huard should have a repeat performance of last week as he’s facing a decent Arizona defense. If you need a QB (Palmer, Vick, Hasselbeck, or Carr are your #1 QBs), Huard should be on the waiver and should net about 15 fantasy points.
Greg Jennings, WR, PackersJennings is an excellent big play receiver. Favre gives him a lot of looks and Jennings is quickly earning respect for his speed and his ability to take it to the house every time he touches the ball. Favre will be throwing a lot, as every week, and Driver could be out with an injury, which makes Jennings stock skyrocket.
Greg Lewis, WR, Eagles – Donte Stallworth’s hamstring injury could force Lewis into the #2 role for much of the game. I wouldn’t expect huge things from Lewis, but if you’re #2 is, say, Anquan Boldin, Lewis would be a good waiver pickup this week.
